Details: Paul lives in seclusion in Bruges, the "dead" city, passive and discouraged, he mourns his deceased wife. She believes that she is in the young dancer Marietta. Through a dream, however, he realizes that his feelings for Marietta were just the convulsive attempt to revive his wife. As Marietta makes fun of Paul's emotion, he strangles her - and with the awakening he is freed from his obsessions. In the opera "Die tote Stadt" Erich Wolfgang Korngold proves his accuracy in the selection of compositional means of late Romanticism and Impressionism. Fabulously he masters the sonically overwhelming orchestral apparatus. The masterpiece, premiered on December 4, 1920 in Hamburg and Cologne on the same evening, will be re-staged at the Munich National Theater by house deputy Simon Stone. The main roles will feature Jonas Kaufmann and Marlis Petersen, with Kirill Petrenko at the podium of the Bavarian State Orchestra.
